NNX13AR51G - THE WORK EFFORT OF THE CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK (CCNY), HEADED BY DR. BRIAN VANT-HULL, IS TO DEVELOP TWO UNIQUE NATIONAL CLIMATE ASSESSMENT (NCA) INDICATORS THAT ARE SIMPLE AND USEFUL FOR MONITORING LONG-TERM CHANGES IN INTENSE CONVECTION AND DRY LIGHTNING EVENTS. THE INDICATORS ARE TO BE DERIVED FROM NATIONAL LIGHTNING DETECTION NETWORKTM (NLDN) CLOUD-TO-GROUND LIGHTNING DATA (OBTAINED FROM NASA MARSHALL SPACE FLIGHT CENTER S OWN ARCHIVE) AND RAINFALL MEASUREMENTS FROM THE NATIONAL RADAR MOSAIC. THESE INDICATORS NEED TO BE COMPUTED ACROSS ALL OF CONUS AT HOURLY INTERVALS USING THE SAME 0.2O GRID APPLIED IN THE LIGHTNING SOFTWARE ANALYSIS TOOL (LSAT). THE FIRST INDICATOR IS THE INTENSE CONVECTION INDICATOR (ICI) GIVEN BY THE PRODUCT OF TOTAL RAINFALL R (IN MILLIMETERS) AND TOTAL NUMBER OF CG STROKES M. IT ALLOWS ONE TO MONITOR, BY PROXY, THE EVOLUTION OF THE NUMBER OF INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS THAT ARE OFTEN, BUT NOT NECESSARILY, ACCOMPANIED BY FLOODS, HAILSTONES, AND TORNADOS. THE SECOND INDICATOR IS THE DRY LIGHTNING INDICATOR (DLI). IT IS COMPUTED FOR EACH GRID CELL AND PERIOD BY DIVIDING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CG STROKES M BY THE RAINFALL AMOUNT R. IF THE RAINFALL AMOUNT IS ABOVE A SPECIFIED THRESHOLD RO (I.E., CONDITIONS ARE TOO WET ), THE INDICATOR IS ASSIGNED TO ZERO. INITIAL RUNS/TESTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO DETERMINE AN APPROPRIATE VALUE FOR RO. SINCE DRY LIGHTNING (I.E., CG LIGHTNING ACCOMPANIED BY LITTLE OR NO RAINFALL) IS IMPORTANT TO WILDFIRE IGNITION, THE TRENDING OF THE DLI WILL BE OF VALUE TO DECISION MAKERS IN THE FORESTRY SECTOR. COMPLETION OF YEAR END REPORTS IS EXPECTED.

NNM13AA38C - PHASE A/B DEVELOPMENT OF THE JUICE ULTRAVIOLET SPECTROGRAPH CT,CL THE EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY SELECTED THE JUPITER ICY MOONS EXPLORER (JUICE) MISSION AS THE FIRST MISSION IN ITS LARGE-CLASS MISSION PORTFOLIO UNDER THE COSMIC VISION PROGRAM. THE JUICE MISSION WILL INVESTIGATE JUPITER AND ITS ICY MOONS, COMPLETING ITS MISSION BY ORBITING GANYMEDE. THE MISSION IS PLANNED FOR LAUNCH IN 2022. THE NASA SCIENCE MISSION DIRECTORATE (SMD) HAS OFFERED TO COLLABORATE IN THIS MISSION. IN 2012, NASA ISSUED PROGRAM ELEMENT APPENDIX (PEA) K AS AN APPENDIX OF THE SECOND STAND ALONE MISSIONS OF OPPORTUNITY NOTICE (SALMON-2)(NNH12ZDA006O-JUICE) ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY (AO)(NNH12ZDA006O) FOR THE PURPOSE OF SOLICITING PROPOSALS FOR JUICE MISSION OF OPPORTUNITY (MO) INVESTIGATIONS TO BE MANAGED UNDER THE NASA NEW FRONTIERS PROGRAM. THE JUICE ULTRAVIOLET IMAGING SPECTROGRAPH (JUICE-UVS) IS A COMPLETE, STAND-ALONE INSTRUMENT PROPOSED AND SELECTED UNDER THE SALMON-2 AO, TO BE INCLUDED IN THE ESA JUICE PAYLOAD AS PART OF NASAS U.S. CONTRIBUTION, AND DEVELOPED BY THE SOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE (SWRI) IN SAN ANTONIO, TX. THE LEADER OF THE JUICE-UVS TEAM IS THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR (PI), DR. RANDY GLADSTONE OF SWRI. THE GOALS OF THE JUICE-UVS INVESTIGATION ARE TO: 1) EXPLORE THE ATMOSPHERES, PLASMA INTERACTIONS, AND SURFACES OF THE GALILEAN SATELLITES; 2) DETERMINE THE DYNAMICS, CHEMISTRY, AND VERTICAL STRUCTURE OF JUPITERS UPPER ATMOSPHERE, FROM EQUATOR TO POLE, AS A TEMPLATE FOR GIANT PLANETS EVERYWHERE; AND 3) INVESTIGATE THE JUPITER-IO CONNECTION BY QUANTIFYING ENERGY AND MASS FLOW IN THE IO ATMOSPHERE, NEUTRAL CLOUDS, AND TORUS. THESE GOALS ARE CLOSELY ALIGNED TO THOSE DESCRIBED IN THE JUICE ASSESSMENT STUDY REPORT, AND ARE CONSISTENT WITH NASA GOALS IN THE MOST RECENT PLANETARY DECADAL SURVEY, THE EJSM STUDY REPORT, AND SMDS FORMAL GOALS DOCUMENTS.

NNX12AB06G - THE GLM GROUND FLASH FRACTION RETRIEVAL ALGORITHM: IMPROVEMENT, TESTING, AND DEMONSTRATION THE FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS TO EXTEND, OPTIMIZE, AND RIGOROUSLY EVALUATE AN EXISTING ALGORITHM THAT RETRIEVES THE GROUND FLASH FRACTION IN A SET OF N FLASHES OBSERVED BY THE GEOSTATIONARY LIGHTNING MAPPER (GLM). THE GROUND FLASH FRACTION (WHICH PROVIDES THE RATIO OF THE # OF CLOUD FLASHES TO THE # OF GROUND FLASHES, OR SO-CALLED Z RATIO ) HAS SIGNIFICANT UTILITY IN A VARIETY OF SCIENTIFIC AREAS SUCH AS: LIGHTNING NITROGEN OXIDE (NOX) PRODUCTION FOR AIR QUALITY&GLOBAL CHEMISTRY/CLIMATE MODELING, SEVERE WEATHER STUDIES, LIGHTNING-CONVECTION RELATIONSHIPS, THE CONTRIBUTION OF LIGHTNING TO THE GLOBAL ELECTRIC CIRCUIT, AND CROSS-SENSOR VALIDATION. THE EXISTING ALGORITHM WAS DEVELOPED BY PREVIOUS R3 EFFORTS. IT EMPLOYS A BAYESIAN RETRIEVAL METHODOLOGY. IT ALSO EMPLOYS A MIXED EXPONENTIAL DISTRIBUTION MODEL FOR DESCRIBING THE STATISTICAL NATURE OF CLOUD-TOP LIGHTNING OPTICAL CHARACTERISTICS. THE RETRIEVAL ALGORITHM WAS TESTED USING SIMULATIONS, AND WAS DIRECTLY APPLIED TO OPTICAL TRANSIENT DETECTOR (OTD) DATA. THE RETRIEVAL RESULTS FROM THE OTD STUDY WERE COMPARED WITH THE GROUND FLASH FRACTION INFERRED FROM NATIONAL LIGHTNING DETECTION NETWORK (NLDN) DATA TO ASSESS RETRIEVAL ERRORS. THE OVERALL RESULTS WERE ENCOURAGING, BUT MORE WORK IS NEEDED TO FULLY OPTIMIZE THE ALGORITHM AND TO BUILD THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE IN ITS OPERATIONAL APPLICATION. IN THE PROPOSED PROJECT, FOUR TASKS WILL BE PERFORMED. FIRST, THE EXISTING BAYESIAN RETRIEVAL ALGORITHM WILL BE IMPROVED BY EMPLOYING A PARAMETER SEARCH INITIALIZATION THAT IS BASED ON THE GROBNER-BASIS SOLUTION SCHEME; IMPROVEMENTS WILL BE QUANTIFIED USING SIMULATIONS AND THE PREVIOUS OTD/NLDN DATASETS. SECOND, THE GROBNER-MODIFIED ALGORITHM WILL BE TESTED AND EVALUATED BY APPLYING IT TO LIGHTNING IMAGING SENSOR (LIS)/NLDN DATASETS. THIRD, A JOURNAL PAPER WILL BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF YEAR 2 THAT FULLY DOCUMENTS THE RETRIEVAL ALGORITHM AND THAT SERVES AS THE FOUNDATION TO AN ALGORITHM THEORETICAL BASIS DOCUMENT (ATBD). FOURTH, AS PART OF THE OPTIONAL THIRD YEAR, A VISUAL DEMONSTRATION OF THE ALGORITHM PRODUCT WITHIN THE PROVING GROUND WILL BE PROVIDED. IN PARTICULAR, IT WILL BE SHOWN HOW GROUND FLASH FRACTION INFORMATION CAN BE HANDED OFF TO THE NASA MSFC LIGHTNING NITROGEN OXIDES MODEL (LNOM) TO IMPROVE THE OPERATIONAL ACCURACY OF THE COMMUNITY MULTISCALE AIR QUALITY (CMAQ) MODEL.
