NNX14AC28A - IMAGINARY LINES (DBA SALLY RIDE SCIENCE) IS PROPOSING TO CONTINUE ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH NASA ON SALLY RIDE EARTHKAM. EARTHKAM IS AN EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL NASA EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT ACTIVELY INVOLVES BOTH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS AND COLLEGE UNDERGRADUATES IN THE OPERATION OF AN EARTH-LOOKING CAMERA ABOARD THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (ISS). APPROXIMATELY 500,000 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, REPRESENTING THOUSANDS OF SCHOOLS IN 78 COUNTRIES, HAVE PARTICIPATED IN EARTHKAM SINCE THE PROGRAM S INCEPTION IN 1994 AND APPROXIMATELY 500 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO (UCSD) HAVE RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS OR ACADEMIC CREDIT TO WORK ON THE PROGRAM. THE CAMERA INITIALLY FLEW ON 5 SHUTTLE FLIGHTS AND HAS NOW BEEN OPERATIONAL FOR 42 MISSIONS ON THE ISS. STUDENTS OPERATING THE EARTHKAM CAMERA HAVE TAKEN OVER 75,000 IMAGES OF OUR EARTH. THIS COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT WILL CONTINUE THE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL EARTHKAM PROGRAM, BY RETAINING THE CONTINUITY OF ITS MISSION OPERATIONS CENTER AT UCSD, AND THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DEVELOPED OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS. THE GOAL IS TO SEEK ADDITIONAL FUNDING WHICH WILL ALLOW THE PROGRAM TO EXPAND SIGNIFICANTLY BY REACHING THOUSANDS MORE SCHOOLS BOTH DOMESTICALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY AND ALSO EXTEND THE BREADTH OF THE SUPPORTING CURRICULUM AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. EARTHKAM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO LEVERAGE SALLY RIDE SCIENCE STEM CONTENT AND TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMS, AND GROW THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS. THIS PROPOSAL SUPPORTS THE CORE EARTHKAM PROGRAM OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS BY MAINTAINING THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE EARTHKAM MISSION OPERATIONS CENTER. SALLY RIDE SCIENCE IS A SMALL, WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS. THE COMPANY WILL CONTINUE TO SEEK ADDITIONAL FUNDING SOURCES AND PARTNERSHIPS TO EXPAND THE FUNCTIONALITY AND REACH OF THE PROGRAM AND ENABLE EARTHKAM TO REALIZE ITS FULL POTENTIAL.
